Strengths Recognized, Skills Expanded
When you hear Heather talk, you smile. Her positive energy flows through every statement. Her story echoes what makes DTS more than a workplace. You experience mutual respect, trust and laughter.
“People ‘know’ each other,” Heather explained, “We’re not a giant shop, we're like a secondary family. We care about each other and about what we do. And we have fun while we do it.”
When leadership recognizes skills and aptitudes they provide opportunities – like with Heather.
Working as a machinist for a company that made windows, she brought experience and a strong appreciation for high standards – critical for custom work. But DTS saw more. They provided a path to a position aligned with what she enjoys. “I think they saw my strengths more than I did. They gave me the push and the chance to prove I could do it.”
Heather sees her role as the central hub, responsible for creating a smooth operation. She directs the flow of communication throughout the company and with outside vendors. Her responsibilities include inventory, purchasing and schedule tracking. As she explains, “I'm pretty much three months ahead of everyone, making sure all the products and materials are in-house for orders. It’s like being the “centerpiece”, insuring everything can be produced efficiently and on-time.”
Creating Products People Notice
When Heather describes DTS products, her eyes light up. You since the satisfaction and joy she gets at work. From the large stainless-steel commercial grills to the luxurious yacht door systems – every component carries craftsmanship that surprises people. She said, “When I tell them that we make those here, they're like, ‘oh, they're so beautiful. They're so flashy. I can't believe you guys make something that cool up in Northern Michigan.’ So, yea, we make luxury stuff!”
Heather also appreciates DTS not only manufactures parts, but also designs them. Where the aesthetics holds as much value as its performance.
“I like being part of something bigger. You go out on a dock and see a boat – it’s like, oh my gosh, we helped make that!” She continued, “Our products are insanely stunning and functional. I like knowing I help make this company better – and that makes other companies better too.”
We like playing a role in a success story. Seeing rave reviews after hard work.
Where Hard Work Comes Full Circle
Customer enjoyment drives creativity. The depth of design and thought makes customers want more.
“It’s what we do here. We make what people WILL want.” Heather explained, “Everyone works together – we don’t like missing deadlines, so we do our best to make sure products are of high quality and put out on time.” She added, “Our customers are king – we want them happy and we want them to continue to spread the word that we do great work and we stand behind our designs.” DTS rewards employees with monthly profit-sharing bonuses.
“To work for a company that wants to share their profits with you because you work hard – it makes me extremely happy! They want you to succeed as much as they want the business to succeed.”
“Our customers are king – we want them happy."
Respect for Work and Family
Respect fills the work environment and extends to the employees’ personal lives. “In Northern Michigan, we have high standards but we also have a laid-back vibe. Family and a life outside of work is important.” Heather shared, “I feel comfortable knowing that if something comes up at home, I won’t be penalized for tending to it. I appreciate the leadership understands.”
Mentioning the bonus of living in northern Michigan, Heather’s smile said it all. It’s a balanced life – a key reason why DTS attracts and retains skilled people. People want to play a role in the company’s growth.
